Disagree. I've always thought of beauty as a secondary essential for humans -after food, water, procreation, and an agreeable climate and alongside community, love, artful expression, etc.

Only a person who has it all, all the time can think useful things are ugly. When deprived of something essential in our life, even the seemingly ugly can appear beautiful. So I'd say, this perspective is reliant on the position of a person.

In general I suppose..but there are exceptions.
Hmm, well colour is beautiful and it helps us know what not to eat, what time of day it is, and whether you're drinking water or blood haha.

@urchoice, I think the door is open in this case for shades of essential-ness. Especially since what-is-beautiful is pretty darn subjective.
