I am an atheist, and I just think that there is no "point" in life. I don't mean I'm suicidal. In fact, I am regularly happy!
Even if we weren't born for a reason, we make a reason. There is so much greatness in the world that we all can find our goal, even if life itself has no purpose.
In return, I ask, what's the point in life for you religious folks? Why live your life to please an imaginary friend?

You just explained why religion was created. Man needed a purpose for living and a way to avoid mortality.

@SW-User I was raised christian and went to a private christian school. I know all the stories and teachings.
Why do you think everything has to serve a purpose? Why is it so hard to accept that you're simply an arrangement of molecules?

@AcidBurn because it makes no sense with a god theres a purpose and it makes since in my opinion but i respect your thoughts
@SW-User I get where you're coming from. To many people religion doesn't make sense. Like I said, it was created to fill a void.
Our being here doesn't make sense, so there must be a higher power... yeah, let's go with that.

Why do you think there has to be a purpose ?
If there was one, do you not think we'd know exactly what it is after having been around for 200,000 years ?
Man as we know him, is just another step on the evolutionary scale.
Sooner or later he'll evolve into whatever comes next. Just as we did.

I believe there is a God but I also believe that God wants nothing to do with us anymore. Did you know a fruit fly lives for mere days? What's the point of it's life, since it's shorter it must mean it's more important given what your saying

Why do you live? What your purpose?
There are people all over the world who are doing good things and they have never heard the gospel. People with families who live a very loving and compassionate life.

@SimplyTracie That is true but you are mis undersranding what i was trying to say why though? Why are we made we are only here for a short period of time, so once we die..then what?? What was the point of being here if we are for such a short amount of time..do we die and thats it? What was the point of even living?
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@SW-User After we die, we all go to heaven.

My purpose is my job. My family. Persuing goals and achieving dreams. Having a legacy. Not indifferent then anyone else. We make our own purpose in life. No god required.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@User41 And at the end of it all who cares.
User41 · 36-40, M
No one I suppose. No one cared before I was born either. Why should I be afraid of it once I'm dead?

SW-User
@User41 what hippy said at the end of it when you die who cares why did you live? What was the real purpose since you dont believe in god
When you die you believe nothing will happen right? You're dead gone forever
What was the point then or you even being born? We are on this earth for such a small amount of time then we die. So you think you were made to die and thats it?

To advance our species.
To make our little corners of the world better than we started.
To achieve great things and remembered for years, decades to come within the framework of our limitations.
There's a lot of things to live for that don't require religion.

the purpose in life is to do good, Be good, while you are living it, science tells us that matter cannot be created or destroyed, just transformed, therefore the life we are living now is just 1 stage on a continuous journey.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
I just think that the world doesn't need me to be resurrected or reincarnated or eternal. I think all religion is too anthropocentric for such thing as the universe. I think humans aren't the most important thing that's ever happened on this world and that there's no soul, just the mind. The human brain is awesome, I can still live without a higher purpose, just like animals do. And that still doesn't make me any less logical.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@HannibalAteMeOut Then you don't know most religions at all.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@hippyjoe1955 true, and I don't care to discover them either (at that phase of my life, at least).
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M

people fill their lives with anything that makes them happy. thats why greed is so rampant
bijouxbroussard · F
It’s possible to enjoy being alive, the beauty of nature, and to be kind to and love other people without following an organized religion. It’s possible to understand and accept that life is precious and also that eventually it ends. There needn’t be anything more. We are capable of making the life we have good or bad by our own actions even if we don’t control the circumstances of our entering or leaving it.

SW-User
@bijouxbroussard because if there no purpose in my opinion it just doesnt makes sense everything in life has a purpose everything around us has a purpose so what makes us being being born into this world any different?
but thanks for your thoughts i respect it

So true. If there is no God there is no need to argue about it. After all you are simply disagreeing with a pile of magic mud so who cares?
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@newjaninev2 There is no purpose. Go back to you magic mud if you don't believe me.

SW-User
@newjaninev2 ok

@SW-User Never mind hippyjoe1955. He wants you experience misery and suffering, hoping that you will be driven towards his particular magical entity... one that magically poofs humans out of dirt.
You might find some perspective in this:
"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?
(Richard Dawkins)
You'll notice that finding purpose in the way I suggested also leads to moral behaviour... seeking to maximise the wellbeing of any organism capable of otherwise suffering.
Even a cursory examination of the world will show you that religion is neither the source nor the arbiter of morality... it's empathy.

how sad for you to need a god in order to live.
such poor value upon your life you have.

@SW-User youre going to get a lot of God and religion bashers from people who dont know anything about religion by asking this kind of question.

SW-User
@SW-User i had that in mind when i asked but i expected most people to be mature about answering the question and most people who answered even though they dis agreed with me answered maturely and with respect without bashing what i believe which i respect

@SW-User im kind of suprised with that a lot of people usually dont respond well to religious posts. there usually tends to be some form of mockery or belittling.

Are you suggesting we kill ourselves?

@PoizonApple No..
Im just confused what do you guys think the purpose of life is? I feel life is pointless if there wasnt no god what is the purpose of life to you guys who dont believe what do you think?
