Both

It ebbs and flows. At times I thought life had my back, at times it didn't take it easy.

The current pulls in the direction that society wishes.

That doesn't mean it's the direction anyone wants. Nor even the correct direction to go.

Even minor tugs in a different direction will marginally change societies direction.

So all anyone can do is slow things down or slightly divert in the current direction.

There have been many different times of both

The current has pulled me in a new direction constantly. You adapt your life to the current. It will all work out fine if you do :)

The last two years it has pulled against me and this year it has pulled hard. ☹
