A friend is someone who doesn't play games or lie to you. Whether it's online or in real life. Deep meaningful conversations are actually the foundation for a solid friendship.
I'm friends with someone I met online 12 years ago. We speak on the phone and text. We've never met in person. It doesn't mean he's any less of a friend than the ones I see in person. As a matter of fact, he's a closer friend than a few of them.

Would you like meet this friend in person? @SW-User

@solitaire No, it's just not necessary. We live on opposite sides of the country and I can't imagine spending hours hanging out with him. It's just not that kind of friendship. It might even ruin it. We talk when we have something to say or just to say hello and find out how the other is doing.
What is a friend? Someone who listens when you need to talk, someone who comforts you when you cry, laughs with you when you laugh. Someone who gets angry when you get hurt, gives you the benefit of the doubt.

Online friends are not always available. Neither are real life friends.

I think online friends are very real.

The Internet was once a place where you could make long-term friendships, but now it is a place where people come and go or continuously move from one conversation to the next. Plenty of people are friendly, but yet they are entertaining so many other people, that it is difficult to establish anything consistent with them.

I don’t believe in online friendships anymore@FrozenGuy
FrozenGuy · 61-69, M
@solitaire My closest friendships began online and moved to the real world. Some didn't last, but they were good friendships at one time. I think it is still possible to make a good friend online, but it is more difficult now. Many people choose to keep their options open, rather than settle for one good friend, since there are so many choices online. This is a sad reality in 2020.

Over the years on four sites I've met a lot of people and made lots of friends and still friends after ten years....I talk to them more often than real friends...

Nice. Have you’ll exchanged numbers? Met in person? @Platinum

@solitaire we email , some we talk on the phone but sadly they live in America and I'm in uk....

I think so. I have several friends who I’ve known only online but still consider them to be real and true. I don’t mean online “lovers,” I mean friends.

My thoughts go both ways on this one. I like what Harry said.... online friends can be every bit or better than offline friends. That being said, I’ve been disappointed by a few close friendships here - but - that can happen in real life friendships too, I suppose. It seems easier for people to do that online for some reason.... not sure why.

Online friendships have their limitations all said and done @Ambroseguy80

@solitaire chances are.... that’s accurate.

bartender · 36-40, M
@solitaire good. U deserve better
solitaire · 41-45, F
Yeah. I just wanted to meet as a friend. When he was in town next. I need more “real world” connections. That’s for sure @bartender

What defines friendship then if not such aspects?
Evened · 51-55, M
@solitaire Okay, then it's your own perception. I have a good friend, I would go so far to say that he is my best friend and we met online. It took ten years until we met in person but I wouldn't say that he's not been a friend all the time before.
solitaire · 41-45, F
Wow @Evened
Evened · 51-55, M
@solitaire just seeing other replies here, I would say it's really a personal preference or expectation so possibly there is no general reply to your initial question.

I think so. This has been happening for years, people had pen pals before.

I have people online that I care very much for and consider them to be friends.
I've made true online friends.

Well it depends
