We wouldn't be able to buy much. Gold is rare; there's not enough of it to go around (which is why everyone- or just about- has abandoned the gold standard), and it's also HEAVY. You'd need a team of mules to transport your wallet.
Although I suppose that would make for a good pick-up line, if you were an early adopter...

@JoyfulSilence Do you honestly think people are going to carry that much untraceable money around unprotected?

The gold will lost its value so NO value just like Nikel. What makes gold & platinum important because they are rare!

I think some people would accept them once they get weighed etc.

I asked Google how many pounds of gold it would take to buy a car. It said:
That would fit in my pocket!
Google says
Yet heavier!
With gold trading at approximately $4,550 per troy ounce, it takes just 0.68 pounds of gold to buy an average new car costing $45,000.
That would fit in my pocket!
Google says
Roughly the volume of a single standard Matchbox toy car.
Yet heavier!

@JoyfulSilence and now I'm sick to my stomach. I had the chance to buy 24 karat gold at $371 a gram in 1982 and decided not to invest in it.
