Is it just me or pants are... normal to use?

it used to be that way in the US when my Dad was young.

I don't know about this habit. To me it's weird if people don't allow boys to have normal trousers.

Wearing pants is a tradition. You become a man the day you wear pants.
Not even in winter you are able to use pants if you are young.

This is the thing I find the most strange in here. Pants as a ritual of passage.

You mean normal trousers? Those were the first trousers I had, I think. Those were... erm.. the normal trousers I wore.

in uk in the olden days under 13 wore shorts to school that went down to their knees, then when they went to grammar school they got long trousers,

My little men wore trousers when they were able to walk well on their own.

Yes, even in freezing winter.

My dad didn't until he was nearly 15

Nowadays, to wear short trousers is in fashion 😝

I am 16 and I still wear only shorts.

Boys shouldn't wear long pants/trousers only shorts.
