You don't have to explain yourself to them. I made a different choice after being abandoned by my own, different and better are two different things. Sometimes by allowing people back into your trust when you're not ready to evade their hurt is even more destructive than the first time they have let you down and betrayed you. Your only responsibility now is towards those children and you have done plenty for their sake. Keep doing that. Your good deeds will speak for you always.
