When you really think about it, you can know people here as well as you can know them in real life, unless you have extensive contact with them, like family or colleagues - and even there people get snookered.

I believe with enough observation, people reveal themselves even through the written word - a hair trigger temper, a contempt for others, an inability to tolerate opposing opinions. I would trust a great many here with important things.

I have one I consider to be a good friend. I would trust him enough to let him visit. I have an adult child so he could hold his own. I wouldn't trust anyone with a young child unless I had some clean background data on them.
