No not in the slightest

No but many jobs have a degree as a requirement. Many professions have it as a minimum requirement to be licensed.
@TexChik Ya I think I prefer any doctors attending me to have a degree or two. Preferably from an accredited program
TexChikF
@Notmesam yep...

@TexChik
It's a way of restricting access, lol.

No. It proves you can finish something that you started and in many cases gets a foot in the door. You have to prove you can do the job once you have it in order to keep it. A degree does not make you capable.

Anyone can acquire knowledge anywhere, it is more possible with the actual environment..going to a university is to recieve formal education or to be prepared for a profession. In my opinion, a person who is smarter are the ones who have great common sense be it out of school or what more if they have aquired a degree. Those who made much and those who aimed good and clean reputation are also smart.

@Sepia
In College is not the same as Higher Education.
Sepia36-40, F
@mathsman okay.. So what you meant by was graduate school? There has to be a good analysis of the supply of professionals in the country by subsequent years..
mathsman70-79, M
@Sepia
I don't think the country needs that 50% are professionals.
This country there is a greater need for experienced technical staff, engineering craftspeople, electricians, plumbers, and so on, the country does not need that 50% of the population have degree level qualifications.
It's great to motivate people but they need to be motivated in the right direction.

Absolutely not.
ozgirl51226-30, F
It has the potential to do that through teaching thinking skills... Funny thing is that often successful companies are started by people with no uni experience
curiosi61-69, F
No, a degree is just memorizing what the powers that be want you to know.
TexChikF
@curiosi that鈥檚 not true silly
WheelchairNOLA31-35, F
No the smartest person I know doesn't have a degree yet some of the dumbest people I know do.
TrashCatM
That depends. It certainly makes one more disciplined and informed in many cases.
SW-User
Makes them more educated but not more intelligent
abe18246-50, M
@SW-User this!
CountScrofula41-45, M
No. It makes you educated. Plenty of dumbass educated people.
jackson55M
Nope. College is not for everyone.
LucyFuhr56-60, F
It doesn't necessarily make people smarter considering the number of educated idiots there are; it does make one more "employable" though.
SW-User
Learning extends one's knowledge not one's intelligence. A university degree doesn't even describe the amount of knowledge someone has.
TexChikF
A degree allows a person to work in a field that requires they continue to grow in order to climb the ladder of success and get better pay .
More educated. Perhaps motivates a person to seek and learn more knowledge than they would have without having attended.
Are you serious? I've met college graduates who are so unintelligent, God does not believe it!
redredredM
no but admittance requirements serve as a filter to separate the qualified from the unqualified
MissTaken36-40, F
No all it proves is that you have the ability to learn and not how to use that learning
mathsman70-79, M
Maybe you need to be "smart" already to study for a degree.
ImRileyTheDog22-25, F
It could in that subject but not in general
thatscottishguy26-30, M
Next year I might have one so definitely not.

If you think knowledge is what makes a person smart then yes.
MartinTheFirst26-30, M
@SW-User the amount of knowledge you generally gain from a day to day basis can not be compared to the rapid knowledge you get from university.
SW-User
@MartinTheFirst That鈥檚 not how going to university works really. It does not bestow you with a vast amount of knowledge it gives you the fundamentals of reasoning. You get taught a process. People that skip uni an learn a trade are not less intelligent.
MartinTheFirst26-30, M
@SW-User ok

No, not at all.
