Always remember the other sides viewpoints. Respect their views. Use evidence/quotes/statistics to back up your claim.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Randomguy2399 I agree. Be respectful always
Randomguy2399 · 22-25, M
@SimplyTracie Exactly

Yup, I have been. Both in high school and in college. I LOVE the art of debate.

The first thing you need to do is know the opposing view as well or better than your own. Know what their main points will be and what your counters will be before you walk in. Know whether their arguments are based in logic or emotion.

Next, remain calm. At all costs, remain calm. That doesn't mean that you can't raise your voice or interject some emotion into your presentation, but on the inside you need to be cool as a cucumber to keep sharp.

And the most important thing to understand is that you are NOT trying to convince your opponent of anything. You are trying to convince the audience. The audience is always your audience, not your opponent. He or she is simply a prop you use to make your points.

@SimplyTracie There is a huge difference.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@sarabee1995 How does one get them to start debating instead of arguing? It’s way more productive.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SimplyTracie The vast majority of people do not know what the word debate means and have only ever experienced arguing. Asking them to then logically discuss an issue they are emotional about is pointless. Sorry.

But, for the record, I'm happy to discuss almost any issue with you that you'd like. From what I've read of your posts, we think alike on some issues and differ on others.
Nah but I made the Vice President of the high school debate team have an angry emotional breakdown during a class debate one time lol. I guess the main advice is to make them play into your narrative and control the tempo of the debate. In order to do that, question and nitpick every little point they make and doubt their validity for anything. If they say 2+2=4, say that it’s not and 3-1=2 instead, etc.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Insomniac100 But the point of a debate to rebut their position? So your rebuttal has prove them wrong. No?
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
No just a quiz bowl team
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@vetguy1991 That’s okay. Making the team is bueno.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@SimplyTracie thank you :)
Dan509 · 26-30, M
I was in debate two years of high school, I wasn't good
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Dan509 How can you possibly know what to rebut in advance?
Dan509 · 26-30, M
@SimplyTracie you don't, you come up with that during their speech. You might also think what they might say ahead of time and think of a rebuttal
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Dan509 hmmmm Okay
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
No, I haven't ... But objectivity and not falling for fallacious argument I think had to be up there ..
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@SimplyTracie true... But often people will put forward an argument that sounds dodgy and ask if you agree with that point of view... Next minute they have you wrapped up in non sequiturs and it's hard to escape
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@ozgirl512 Ohhhh 😝
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@SimplyTracie there's some great books out there on rational arguments and such... They can be an interesting read
KaysHealingPath · 36-40, F
Oh debate was my favorite in high school

basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M

SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@basilfawlty89 Ahh shit. Is it one of them gauge thangs? Smaller means bigger?
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie nah it's just when the gun was designed. They needed a lighter rifle with the AR15
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@basilfawlty89 oh okay.
DDonde · 31-35, M
Yeah, I was in high school.

SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
