Certainly many powerful men have a powerful woman at their side or behind the scenes supporting them. These women can be powerful in many ways, and some can even <ahem> go on to run for president themselves!

I think our (first world) culture has a strong bias toward aggression and domination which are more fundamentally male traits than female ones. It isn't surprising to me that many women choose to assert their personal power through less aggressive/dominant modes than politics, or as implied here through the proxy of a powerful man who is the face of the "machine".

I don't take the series "House of Cards" seriously as a direct presentation of real life in politics but as a caricature I think it offers a lot of insight into the power of men/women in politics.

I don't think that is really true any more because most powerful men today are assholes and I hope a powerful woman would slap them upside his head and tell them to knock it off. Instead it seems as though they just go along with them.
