Insurers work on cost of repair versus amount o pay out and amount recoverable from scrap. Body shop repairs and pain soon become expensive and cars are often written off because the repair costs more than the repaired car's resale value.

Have you tried asking the insurers for a settlement figure leaving the car with you to repair at your cost?
