30 years today since the Aramoana Massacre (13/11/1990) [I Am a New Zealander]
The worst mass shooting in New Zealand history* was committed by David Gray in the little township of Aramoana just north of Dunedin. 13 people died during the massacre, not including Gray who died of injuries following a shootout** with armed police.
As a result, in 1992 stricter gun laws were put into effect, including cracking down on military style assault rifles (Gray had used a semi-automatic version of the Chinese Type 56 - an AK-47 clone) and photographic firearms licences.
*surpassed only by the March 15 terrorist attack in Christchurch in 2019, committed by a far-right fascist.
**he came out of a house firing from the hip, and was almost immediately gunned down.
