The wildfire smoke coming the Canadian Rocky Mountains resulted from literal mountainsides covered with 100 year old spruce trees being burnt to the ground with no way to get in to fight those fires by air or land.
Then fires got started in Colorado on the US west coast as well and eventually the smoke worked it's way right across Canada and then back down into the eastern USA.
All we can smell in the air in Toronto is the smell of turpentine burning which is what the sap is inside a spruce tree... the base that turpentine is made from.
If you ever wondered what a garbage dump smelled like when it burns, that's what we've been dealing with across Canada and central USA since last April.
