Mrs Brigden was angry that Rachel had lied to her about having the day off school to study for exams. She was tired of being embarrassed by Rachel's behaviour and readily agreed that this time a more convincing sanction than detention was required and that as a former tennis champion Mr Smedley was the right man to sanction her daughter.
