Yeah, within a year in the work world, I had to learn to do small talk and whatnot - you can't survive otherwise, unless you work an isolated job. Still, I've found that there's a certain degree of depth that you can put into a conversation without completely throwing the other person off, once you fiddle around for a while and get the hang of it.
