I Will Tell You 10 Things About Me

Saw a few of these earlier, and thought I'd join in.

1) I write instruction manuals for a living. They're about as much fun to write as they are to read, which is not at all.

2) I was a camera operator on a short-lived TV show, and a lighting grip on several independent films. It's an amazingly fun job, but sadly doesn't pay well, if at all.

3) I have vivid reoccurring nightmares sometimes.

4) I am a larper and am big into tabletop RPGs, like Dungeons and Dragons and things like that. No, it's not as dorky and corny as popular media would have you believe. I mean, it can be, depending on the people around you, but my group has defied stereotypes of the hobby.

5) I have danced barefoot in the middle of the forest, under the light of a full moon on an autumnal equinox. It was a very cool moment for me, even if I was the only one there.

6) I have laid on the beach in the middle of a storm at night. Just for fun.

7) I've thought about joining an improv comedy group.

8 ) I first met my boyfriend while holding a sword to his throat. It was a foam, larp-safe sword, but still.

9) I have lived in six different US states, and visited over 30 of them.

10) A very young me at various points had dream jobs of working at taco bell (to steal the taco recipes), cargo ship captain, storm chaser, nuclear reactor scientist, and spy. Now I have no dream job.

I also wanted to be a spy growing up. My Primary School had a book about spying, it was just a kids book but it actually had some useful stuff in there. Just before moving on to High School I borrowed it from the Library and forgot to give it back... on purpose. That's the only time I've done something like that.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@Redstar I mean, that's something a good spy would do!
MsAlaineEYesF
Sounds like a great "bucket list".馃憤 I will take your encouragement and share my 10 things about myself...I think it is a good practice in LOOKING at our lives; and maybe adding a few more things to our bucket lists. Thank you for sharing, dear FaeLuna.
ViperM
Do me a favor and get Taco Bell's quesadilla recipe while you're at it 馃構 lol jk
you are living a full life .. good for you. life is short. mark

passingby831-35, F
5-6,Weren't u scared? :o
FaeLuna31-35, F
@passingby8 Nope! I knew the woods pretty well that I was in, so it wasn't that big a concern. Plus, with a full moon, it was really bright. I could see any hazards from a good distance. The beach I had to be a little more cautious on, because the waves were much more rough and if I got caught in one, I'd probably get swept out to sea. So, I just kept my distance from the surf, and it was fine!
4: I want to play with you sometime ;p
Redstar36-40, M
Number 6 sounds awesome! I'm gonna have to do that one day.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@Redstar It was amazing! Wet, cold, windy, and not at all ideal beach weather, but watching the lightning out over the ocean and seeing the massive waves wash up, and listening to that might roar made it all worth it!
Redstar36-40, M
@FaeLuna I'm sure it was :)
Was it raining a lot? I like the rain and sometimes being out in it but I imagine too much rain could ruin that moment. Did you have a raincoat or an umbrella? I'd probably just wear a hoodie.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@Redstar It was a mild rain. Not too hard to be unpleasant. I just had my rain jacket, but I ended up taking it off because it really wasn't bothering me.
Don't give up your dreams!

I used to run while its raining that's about it.

Very interesting facts FaeLuna

#1: Somebody鈥檚 gotta do it
#2: That鈥檚 really cool!
#3: Hopefully you have some pleasant dreams?
#4: Okay I鈥檓 at a total loss. What鈥檚 LARPing mean?
#9: That鈥檚 really cool. I鈥檓 from the NE as well
# 10: quite a diversity of interests.

Thanks for sharing! 馃槈
FaeLuna31-35, F
@Ambroseguy80 Thanks! To answer your questions, I do have pleasant dreams quite often. The nightmares are rare these days, which is good!

LARP stands for Live Action Role Play, and it can take a lot of different forms. Reduced to it's most basic essence, it's like improv theater where you take on the role of a single character for the duration. There are no scene cuts, no scripts, you just act out that character in real time as the collective story is written. Sometimes it can include rules for resolving things you aren't able to do, but your character can. Sometimes it includes rules for fighting. Sometimes it doesn't! There are a lot of different types and styles out there.
Ambroseguy8051-55, M
@FaeLuna definitely a woman of the theater, and apparently funny too. 馃槉
Oh so you're the person writing the manuals I pretty much never bother to read?

It's very rare I ever have to RTFM and when I do It's just like ::sighing::

Oh and my friends are trying to organize party for Dungeons and dragons. I've already rolled a Wizard.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@BetweenKittensandRiots Yup! I know the manuals I write have an audience of maybe 2 people. It's just nice to have in case you need it, even though no one ever really needs it.
@FaeLuna Yeah I recently switched over to Ubuntu and have had to do surprisingly little reading for the past week.

I'm a little bit shocked at how well versed I am in Linux.

It's like I'm already used to it. I tried installing nginx though and had issues once I started to set up SSL.
LeopoldBloomM
Hey, at least you鈥檙e writing for a living. It鈥檚 a start. Imagine when you鈥檙e a famous novelist, people will be reading the instruction manuals you wrote for signs of your future style.
LeopoldBloomM
@FaeLuna Does your company write manuals for specific industries, or for anyone? I'd think it would require specific knowledge, or is it just a matter of reviewing material the company provides, and composing it so that a customer can understand it?

In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig talks about this, where he would interview assembly line workers to put a manual together.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@LeopoldBloom It's a specific industry, and we only write the manuals for the products we make. So I mainly have to talk to our engineers downstairs and get their notes on how it's supposed to work, and combine that with other source material and put it into a language that the end user can understand. And I still need to comply with a style guide that dictates how it's supposed to be formatted, as well as the proper language and phrasing for the sake of a consistent product. So I really don't have much creative ability to add my own mark on it.
LeopoldBloomM
@FaeLuna Yeah, that makes sense. Pirsig did the same thing. He talked about going to the assembly line to interview someone, and the foreman would have him talk to the biggest goof-off because he couldn't spare anyone else.

I know what you mean about that kind of writing. I have to write a lot for my job, and the parameters are pretty strict. About the only opportunity for anything remotely creative is annual evaluations, nominating people for awards, and disciplinary actions.
DallasCowboysFan61-69, M
How did you get a job as a camera person?

What kind of instruction manuals do you write? Are a lot of them outsourced to India or China? I have read a few of them that used poor grammar, wrong choice of words.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@DallasCowboysFan Someone I graduated college with got hired to direct the show, and he reached out to people he knew and trusted to hire them as crew members.

As for the instruction manuals, we make specialized industrial-grade hardware, and we make everything in-house. No outsourcing here.
sarabee199526-30, F
#6, me also. Several times. I love watching ocean storms from shore and always have.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@sarabee1995 They're some of my favorite moments, taking in the raw power of nature, listening to the rumble of the storm and the roar of the ocean. It's just a shame I don't live closer to the shore.
sarabee199526-30, F
@FaeLuna I could not live away from the ocean. I grew up at her edge and she is in me. :)
CountScrofula41-45, M
Love that you met your bf in a LARP with a sword at his throat. I kinda miss my larping days.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@CountScrofula It's certainly an interesting story of how we met, to say the least. Not sure how we'll explain that one to relatives, though.

"Oh, how did you two meet?"
"I almost assassinated him for money, you know how it is."
@FaeLuna 馃ぃ
olderuncle94470-79, M
and what kind of models do you build
FaeLuna31-35, F
@olderuncle944 Ships, both nautical and space, mostly. I tried getting into miniature wargaming at one point, but it didn't catch on with me, and it was going to be way too expensive.

My collection currently has US Navy ships, like a destroyer, cruiser, battleship, and a submarine, the Battlestar Galactica, and the Enterprise. I'm also currently building a Y-Wing fighter and have the USS Arizona to build next.
olderuncle94470-79, M
@FaeLuna nice i built many models sense i was a kid i did a wooden ship once and an aircraft carrier
FaeLuna31-35, F
@olderuncle944 I would love to build a wooden sailing ship model, but all the ones I really like are outside my budget right now, unfortunately. I would like an aircraft carrier too, but finding one in the same scale as my other ships is proving difficult.
5 has witchy vibes 馃槇馃敭 I dig it
FaeLuna31-35, F
@Perspectivedetective All I needed was a campfire and some friends, and it would have been a perfect witchy moment!
thanks for sharing!
trackman1161-69, M
Lol. You have learned the value of living in the moment! 馃檪. Well, accept for the instruction manual day job. I鈥檝e always been curious about what鈥檚 in those, but just not quite serious enough to look at one. 馃
jackson55M
I used to write tech articals for a couple of motorcycle manufacturers. Very exciting reading.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@jackson55 I'm sure the tech articles were a lot more interesting than the owner's manual, though!
xixgunM
I see these, and I really can't think of 10 things about myself that are interesting to other people.
FaeLuna31-35, F
@xixgun You may have to dig deeper to find them, but there's bound to be something interesting there! It's hard to imagine that there's just nothing anyone finds interesting. Even if it sounds mundane to you, it could be unique to someone else!
