I Am Spiritual But Not Religious

This is me rambling about how I feel.
What I am learning, experiencing on this subject.
I was raised southern Baptist.
At a very young age, I had questions!!
I would ask and it was like I was threatening God himself!
I was told, It's the Devil making you think, feel, question the Bible.
Well, I was questioning, and still am, but it isn't because the Devil has ahold of me.
As I said, I wanted answers, so I began my own search for TRUTH!
I started at the beginning, studying Eastern religion.
I read as much as I could on the subject of God from other religions around the world.
Most of them honor God.
They practice kindness, caring and forgiving.
.......
WELLLLLL.... today I went to church with my husband.
The sermon was about "What IS God."
The sermon began with a list of other religions through out history.
How they relate to what God is.
One by one the preacher shot them down.
The then went on to how Christians felt about What God is...
LOVE, the preacher said. God is love, he loves you no matter what you have done or who you are.
STOP right there.
I am listening to words that are contradicting one another!
sigh...
The Sunday school lesson was on Noah... and it included the ages of his clan.
Christians believes man once lived to be in their 900s.
I didn't stutter, not ninety sum odd years old but nine hundred years old.
Then God lowered the average life span to 120yrs, and then again lowered it to our current average life span of 70 to 80 yrs old.
WHY? Because of the increasing wickedness of mankind.
I am listening to words that I can not accept as the truth.
As I get older, I understand more, I grow to be a better person.
I do this through experiencing, learning and growing.
But some never do learn, no matter how long they live.
My God did not punish us by making us die younger.
Why would God wipe out everything he created around the world during Noah's story?
sigh....
What about these days?
Children killing children!
I guess that is why Christians say...The end of the days is at hand.
But I KNOW there is still good and much beauty in this world.
One bad apple spoils the whole bunch!!!??
Sooo many questions!
I am bewildered!!!

Thanks so much for your post. I so appreciate your position.

I've enjoyed listening to retired Bishop John Shelby Spong. Are you familiar with him? It would seem, from the content of your post, you and he might be simpatico. I like him a lot.
