question about flu and immune systems

my bf just had a major flu. bedridden for 3-4 days earlier this week. i also caught the bug. i started with a fever last night took one pill and it went away. had some soreness and it also went away. now i'm just sneezing. is the difference of severity due to our immune systems? or should i expect it to get worse eventually.
