Does this sound strange to you? The dr said whether the thyroid is hyper or hypo, the med is the same: levothyroxine.

Second opinion please
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
It doesn't sound right - and a web search bears that out.
purplepen · 51-55, F
@ButterRobot I took myself off it because I was getting too many side effects and they keep refusing to let me get the t3 and t4 levels tested. They keep saying they only deal with common medical problems and not 'rare diseases.'
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
@purplepen it supposed to be incredibly safe - are you hyper or hypo ?
purplepen · 51-55, F
@ButterRobot Mine has been up and down so that's why I wanted them to check the t3 and t4. My t3 and t4 levels were extremely high a few years ago at a hospital lab, but I didnt have a dr at yhe time so the head of the lab said there was nothing they could do. Recently the levothyroxine messed me up and the drs didn't want to monitor things properly, so I went off it.

That sounds weird. One is high and one is low. You wouldn't be on the same meds for both of those.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Levothyroxene for hypothyroidism (I took mine only half an hour ago), but I'd be surprised if prescribed for the hyper- equivalent. If it's right I can only assume it has some subtler control function than mere "topping-up".
purplepen · 51-55, F
@ArishMell I checked the drug info and it doesn't. The list of side effects also includes hyperthyroidism if it's overprescribed.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@purplepen Thankyou - yes, I can certainly understand that risk!
Fairydust · F
I guess your adding to your body that’s not there to fix the same issue?
purplepen · 51-55, F
@Fairydust It doesn't fit what I've read.

I take levothyroxine it’s true & it’s been very helpful.
purplepen · 51-55, F
@SW-User You probably take it for hypothyroidism and not the opposite. If a thyroid is removed because of hyperthyroidism, it would automatically cause hypothyroidism and you would need to take some form of thyroxine.
That’s correct. My son took that medication.
purplepen · 51-55, F
@Spoiledbrat Correct whether the thyroid is over functioning or under functioning? Because I did some searches and it appears that totally different meds are usually prescribed for an overactive thyroid.
