Congress is going to pass a measure to prevent "doctor shopping." they are doing it to "protect" us from doctor shopping and finding a doctor that will prescribe pain medication. It makes me angry.

I was under the impression that doctor shopping was getting an opioid prescription from one doctor and then going to another in the next few days to get another and then going to another doctor to get yet another prescription. Not shopping for which doctor you liked.

@quitwhendone well, that would be one way to describe it. However, doctors have almost completely stopped prescribing opioid pain medication. So if you find a doctor that will treat you for pain, you are just lucky.
@76May This idea that doctors should stop prescribing opioid pain medication just because some people abuse them is crazy. I don't deal with pain well. When I am in pain, I want relief! I don't want a doctor deciding that I might abuse the meds and thus leave me in pain. Part of a doctor's job is to relieve pain.

@quitwhendone I think the answer to unbearable nowadays is rapidly veering toward assisted suicide instead of good pain management; it's simpler and cheaper.

@greenmountaingal Not everyone in severe pain is dying. And even if I were dying, I'd want to die painlessly.

@quitwhendone Good pain management, opiods and other newer drugs and modalities, can pretty much insure that no one has to die in pain these days. The idea that we would be facing that without assisted suicide is a false dichotomy and simply not true. Most people's idea of pain management for catastrophically ill and dying patients is based on the medical protocols and drugs of 20-30 years ago.
@greenmountaingal What do you recommend for pain management in the dying?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@quitwhendone Pain management is now a medical specialty. It is available in most HMOs and PPOs and other insurance plans. I would seek help from that medical specialty if my regular doctor was not able or willing to accommodate me. In relation to the subject of this post, I would be against any sort of legal change that makes it harder to find appropriate and effective medical management for pain.
@greenmountaingal Yes, I know that about pain management but those specialist still use opioids in conjuction with other drugs.
