Is anyone familiar with Stockholm syndrome? How can police free Stockholm syndrome victims if they tell them they are fine and they aren't minors?

I've been watching and following the R. Kelly docuseries on the women he allegedly abused and and manipulated. One of the girl's fathers said that his daughter had Stockholm syndrome which is a psychological response wherein a captive begins to identify closely with his or her captors, as well as with their agenda and demands. This describes the situation completely. After thorough research I learned that it is often described as brainwashing because the victims think that they are in love with the abusers, and they continue ti follow commands and when help arrives, they don't want to leave and assure everything is fine.

My question is, If a woman is of age, has Stockholm syndrome, and is continuing to be abused, but doesn't''t realize it's abuse because she believes she is in love, What is Law enforcement supposed to do if they arrive to check in on her and she appears to be fine and don't want to leave?

What many fail to understand is that is just how most religions make converts.

@DeWayfarer That actually makes sense.

As long as she's happy, or thinks she's happy, there's not much they can do, except perhaps check on her periodically. But at some point, she will probably become unhappy, or confused at the very least, and then maybe someone will be able to help her. I've heard of deprogramming, which is what they do with people who have been involved in cults. That will probably have to be the first step to helping them.

I don’t think there’s much they can do

@Ohbabe That's very sad and disheartening.
That’s a really tough (but good) question. Grown women are not children. If she thinks she’s in love with the guy, there’s nothing that can be done until she decides she wants to be helped out of the situation.

@bijouxbroussard Wow that's really sad.
@sweetiepoo There is legally nothing that can be done unless she’s declared incompetent.
