Are there carrots in China? Are they an authentic part of Chinese cuisine?

I once knew a woman who got hysterically angry in a Chinese restaurant in Portland, Oregon because she was served a dish with carrots. She kept screaming "There are NO carrots in China! There are NO carrots in China!!!"

It was one of my more memorable restaurant experiences.

This woman is now married to a cleric and lives in San Diego, California. I hope she's resolved her carrot phobia...or whatever it was...

Carrots were one of my favorite fresh foods when I lived in China(Yunnan).

@Cabernetfranc: Thank you! The other posts here are good but since you actually ate actual carrots while actually living in China, I felt I had to give you Best Answer.

according to wikipedia:
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that world production of carrots and turnips (these plants are combined by the FAO) for the calendar year 2013 was 37.2 million tonnes; almost half (~45%) were grown in China. Carrots are widely used in many cuisines, especially in the preparation of salads, and carrot salads are a tradition in many regional cuisines.

and genetic/molecular testing suggests they started in central asia as a species. they're probably closer to native to china than to n. america.

also... cleric? so... she can only wield non edged/penetrating weaponry like .. maces and stuff?

@DeadCowboy: She married a man of the cloth. She is very much established in this new holy life, I understand.

@DeadCowboy: Thanks for doing the research. It seems like the facts are clear: There are plenty of carrots in China.

It's scary how angry some get over the smallest things.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Peaceful: Yes. One has to assume they have some serious reasons that go beyond the culinary status of carrots.

@greenmountaingal: my thoughts exactly. Hope things got better for her, cause that's a crappy way to be in public.

@Peaceful: Trust me, she was worse in private. And our friendship, such as it was, ended that night.
