Does dairy-free cheese taste any good?

I'd like to move away from dairy. Gives my tummy too many issues.

I should take a trip to trader joes on tommorow. I assume they have some...
It would depend on your tastes.

One version can be made at home.
Get a block of firm tofu.
Cover it in 1 cm of Hatcho Miso.
Wrap it in clingfilm or a waxed cloth (close out the air).
Leave it in the fridge for a week.
Remove the miso and keep for re-use in stews and soups.
The tofu will now taste a lot like cheese - but doesn't have the same texture.
Needs to be kept air tight and eaten within a dew days.
@KA9ha I never had problems with rubbery, powdery or hard.
It probably depends on the quality of tofu that you start with.

To get the texture of a cheese you'd probably have to blend it with a fully saturated vegetable fat like hulled sesame oil or the mas from cocoa beans.

@hartfire i had the best of TOFUs from Xuijiang as well as from Canton city... on my tours to china
@KA9ha Yeah, the Chinese versions are softer and silkier. :)

none i ever tried tasted good at all, nor did they have a good texture.

if i was going dairy-free, i'd just skip all dairy-like products, except maybe rice milk on occasion.

Eh... there are a lot of fake cheeses out there now, and yes, some are quite good.
They're definitely not cheese, but you can acquire a taste for some.
