Because it's fun to dress in costumes and eat candy :)

Because it's a chance for real life escapism. No one has to be who they really are. And in some cases, it's the one day a year when people can be themselves.

Because the masses have little else to soothe the crushing tedium of their struggles to survive in our robber-baron prison state than with traditional holidays now converted into orgies of consumption: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's, Independence Day, etc. etc.
