I Want to Go On a Road Trip
I have recently done a road trip holiday. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa; few months ago, I was exploring an area about 100km from home. There was a dirt road that I wanted to see, so after I went for it. Unfortunetly, my Ford Fiesta with low profile tires suffered a cut tire. That stone also injured a wheel bearing on this 2 year old car. I sold that Fiesta and bought a Suzuki Jimny.
December holiday were around the corner, and I needed to do something with my time. I found accomodation, and booked it for a few nights.
15 December I left home on my road trip. From Johannesburg, I made a point of bypassing every traditional toll-gate on the N3. There was a crash at Van Reeenens; so I made a U-turn on the 4-lane undivided highway, and traced back to an 'interesting' dirt road I spotted a few kilometers back. That road eventually took me over de Beers pass into Natal.
In Natal, I took the super-scenic Lower Lotheni road; It was the longest (60km) gravel road I have done to date. The views were absolutely worth every single kilometer. The road goes through the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains; then you pass through 3 villages; then a bit of forest. 13 hours later, I arrived in Underberg.
