How to help illiterate people to become literate?

I know a guy who can't read and I want to help him to read like reading anything but every time I tried to teach him, he seems evading from it.

Anyway, we are already move on and no longer contacted. I'll hope he's okay.
He seems to be a good guy I just want him to be at least knowing reading skills even just a bit.
