I Like Discovering New Music

Coolest Instrument... Many of you think that electricity is something that powers our lives, creates lightning, and something that you don't want to mess with. But did you know you can play music through lightning?

In the 1890's, Nikola Tesla came up with the Tesla Coil for mainly scientific purposes, serious usage. It was meant for wireless energy transmission. This machine made enormous sparks (Think Sorcerer's Apprentice--yes those things are real) though his version can't be audio modulated.

Tesla Coils have changed over the years and are found in many devices you use today, but Tesla's original coil is used mainly for entertainment. His versions mainly incorporated Spark Gap Tesla Coils, which are the easiest to build (one which I have), and Vacuum Tube Tesla Coils, which are harder, but he used these (I think) for his very high frequency publicity stunts in which he's able to touch the arcs without feeling anything.

In the past 15 to 20 years, recent followers of Tesla created a newer versions of the Tesla Coil. These types include the Solid State Tesla Coil, and the Dual Resonant SSTC. Both the SSTCs and DRSSTCs can play music.

Music through lightning? This is done the same way as thunder is made. When an electric arc slices the air, it vibrates at a particular frequency, just as sound waves do. Because the arc is so hot, it causes the air around it to rapidly expand and contract at the same frequency. This causes sound.

The saw-tooth wave sound of a Tesla Coil is nothing alone than to watching it in action, and watching a video doesn't do it liberty. To really enjoy them, you have to see them in real life.

In my opinion, Tesla Coils are the most awesome 'instrument' ever, invented by the most awesome guy ever, and developed by the high-voltage community.

If you're interested in a musical coil, learn to do electronics or pay two grand for one built for you. If you are going to start with TCs, start with a SGTC as they are the easiest and require minimal knowledge about electronics and electricity.

Thank you, that's very interesting. I had to go and listen after reading it. Found some on youtube. Wish I had one of those! I'd never go out again.

Trust me-- you won't. Once you found your way into the community, you can't leave.

And you can buy them. www.zeusaphone.com but they're expensive. Build one, I say. I'm not good enough yet for a musical one, or I am but I'm too lazy, but I have a non-musical Tesla Coil.
