@HairbrushDiva I think it's less about where you come from than when you come from. Driling speling, grammar and the multiplication tables into pupils is something you are more likely to have experienced in the 1950s and 60s than in the 1990s.
Perhaps the drilling was reinforced by corporal punishment for mistakes though that fell out of favour in the 60s.

@MrTanner The school I attended was very old-fashioned about such things, and none the worse for it. We didn't have corporal punishment when I was in school though, that fell out of favour in the 80s.
