Work, passions, how do you get by?

So there is many people out there passionate about things they can't make money from, or establish a career from. Given the person can find a living wage, follow their passion as a hobby, how would you decide? I guess I have chosen thus far to chase my passions very separate from my work. I find it freeing, allows my passion/interest to exist without the complication of being dependant on it financially
