I Am African American

"Uncle Tom". In Harriet Beecher Stowe’s abolitionist 1852 novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Uncle Tom is a martyr. His devotion to his fellow slaves is so unshakable that he sacrifices a chance for freedom and, ultimately, his life to help them.

This is why I hate it when black people use the word Uncle Tom in an attempt to insult blacks who they assume are sellouts.
I always wondered how that got turned into a derogatory term. Never did think that really jived with the intent of the original reference.
