I'm A People Watcher

I'm here to tell you, the most fascinating place on earth is traffic court in a small southern town. It's like watching something a play.

Actually, not me but my son! Minor speeding ticket, but you know the insurance rates for a 20 year old male are already insane. Played the game of having the speedometer checked and going to traffic court, but as the court date was after he was going to be back in college we had a lawyer go represent him. As I believe in the philosophy, "Trust all men but cut the cards," I went to be an observer and see how this lawyer did. Had to go to this courthouse in this town of about 1300. Very southern antebellum style building - huge white columns, red brick, like a movie set for a southern courthouse. Well, you're not allowed to take any electronics in, no phone, AND no kindle, which I didn't realize or I would have brought a bound book And you know, you just sit there, waiting for it to be your case - and I found the whole scene so amusing I don't think I could have concentrated on a book anyway. There was the older heavyset lawyer in his seer-sucker suit, very Orson Wells, my young gregarious lawyer, who was walking around slapping all the cops on the back talking about the Friday night football game at the local high school and about going out for beers (yes, this is the exact moment I knew we were leaving there with no ticket on his record), he was totally Matthew McConaughey. The judge was an Andy Griffith type. I'm telling you, I just wanted some popcorn while I watched the show.
