Black and White, and Gray

A forbidden love, a forbidden child, a forbidden life. Gray realizes his fate is what he cannot escape. The criticism of society, the hatred of the difference, have pushed him down into the loophole of life.

In the chaos of war and discrimination between black and white, a white woman and a
black man risk their reputation just for the love that cannot separate them. Despite the strict laws from both sides, the power of love conquers it all. When Gray came to life, the critics labeled him a product of shame. His father was taken away by his government and was executed. His mother, who was abandoned by the society of hers, was exiled to a camp for people who broke the law. After being separated from parents, Gray was brought to a boarding school for orphans in which he has had to go through the indifferences of the people around him. While many kids have friends to play with, the only thing for Gray to play with is a ball. Their grades are A’s, his grades are D’s or F’s. Their behaviors and attitudes are always respectful and polite, his behavior is always an opposite to theirs: curses and lies. They are quiet, he is noisy. They are a success, he is a failure. While the white government has provided him the physical needs by giving him a home and a proper enough education in an environment where there are no social vices, Gray has never received the psychological needs from the school or the society that he lives in. Because of his color, he is fortunate enough to stay in the boarding school, but unfortunate enough to be treated indifference. The child has always been a loner.

Growing up in white society, white people are naturally superior to or in a higher social class than Gray. He often finds himself being isolated from all of them. Everything they do is considerably good, so good that he can feel the pressure of their high values against his. All of the good things that he does will never be good enough for them, even if they are something highly expected from others. Wherever he goes, people constantly give him the cold look, as if they are looking down on him. He realizes that he does not belong to this environment; his grayness is not white enough, or that the society is too white for him. He has to get away from his mother’s land. Looking at the borderline between black and white, Gray takes a leap of faith and steps his foot on the land where his father was executed. Immediately, the black society welcomes him like a family member, and the people around him start to pay attention to him. He notices they have the same traits as his: noisy, curse, lie, rude, all of that similarity. He has never had the attention from where he was raised and born, and this means a lot to him: a wish come true. And for the first time in his life, he has friends. But the worst is yet to come...

The government wants Gray to become a part of them. In order to be a part of the black society, he has to go through a ceremony. The day the event happens, they put a blindfold on him and take him to a camp where they have been captured many prisoners- a prison of punishment. They take off the blindfold and hand him a gun, then they tell him to shoot one of the prisoners. Facing the number of prisoners in front of him, there is a mysterious empathy that he could feel inside. He begins to hesitate in taking actions. One of his friends shoot a few of them to encourage him, and as soon as the first few gunshots start, Gray steps back with all the shocks and fears in mind. His hands shakenly hold up the gun and point at the direction of the prisoner who stands in front of him. The woman looks at him with tears going down on her face, anxious and afraid. He consciously tosses the gun away and unties the woman. This sparks fury to the people and the government, as they know that Gray is not black enough to become a part of their community. There is a white in him that they are utterly disgusted by it. And so, they turn their backs on him.

After being abandoned by the black government, Gray walks on the road of the
borderline between black and white. A forbidden love, a forbidden child, a forbidden life - Gray realizes his fate is what he cannot escape. The criticism of society and the hatred of the difference have pushed him down into the loophole of life. He will never be good enough or bad enough to be accepted. Consciously, Gray begins to be aware of the differences that he should have realized from the beginning. He does bad things, but he also does good things; and there is no need to try to make himself to be like them. He has already been a part of them since the moment his parents chose each other. The perfection of him being white or black will never exist. There will always be opposition to everything.

Within the moment of realization, he breaks down into tears. For the first time, Gray feels the joy of being himself - knowing that he is the one he wanted to be. As he can’t hold back the emotions and the tears, the sky turns gray and the rain starts falling down. The raindrops has removed the borderline of the white world and the black world. The people from both sides come out and face each other, confused and fearful. Gray stands between them, he grabs one hand from the white side and one from the black side, and places both hands against each other. When they touch, they transform into gray.

The End. 🏴 🏳️
