I Love to Write

He dressed for her. It took him over an hour to dress himself, to know what to wear; after all he looked forward to this date not as a routine but as a first date, a special meeting with one he knew down deep in his heart that he was in love with.

He recalled their first encounter seeing her there at the dance hall. If she was nervous she never let him know it. She wore a pretty new dress and she carried a small pocketbook. Upon seeing that he wondered how many things she had in that very little space.

His eyes were fixed upon her smile and on the gleam in her eye. He felt a bit nervous, a bit shy cause being with a girl this pretty was the style of others not that he didn’t want or didn’t like, but that he never thought himself good enough and now there she was.

Always one of manners he was the perfect gentleman for the first date and for all of the dates to follow.

Always having two left feet he was never comfortable on the dance floor but with her he tripped the light fantastic as he made moves he never thought possible. He felt a freedom he never felt before as dancing became his passion.

Dancing and dinner were the staples of their nights together. They always took a corner table in the most romantic restaurant he could find and there they would be together sipping a cup of coffee or maybe some great tea blend and they’d listen to some cool jazz as they looked into each other’s eyes.

It’s when she drew him in close whispering “I always hoped you’d ask me out and I’m so happy each and every time I see you and if you don’t know it by now, I’m so in love with you.”

As he finished dressing he recalled the first time and the second and the third and her revealing whisper. He recalled the slow dances, the ones where he held her close and of course it’s what he whispered in her ear during that last dance the last time he was with her, “I’m sure you know this but I’d like to tell you myself...I love you too.”

He approached her door and rang the bell. She opened it to him and as he stepped in he said “you’re even more radiant and beautiful than ever.”

And off they strolled to their evening of dancing and dinner. It’s even more special when you’re in love.
