I Love My Family

My daughter's wedding part 3.

At about 3 pm I go to the room where Trish has been getting ready in order to drive her and her 3 bridesmaids the short distance to nearby the bridge. She looked stunning of course in a white wedding dress with a crown of small flowers on her head and a small bunch of beautiful flowers in her hands. Also delicate white sandals with flat soles. To my eyes she looked like a beautiful fairy or something.

So I drive them there slowly in her own car because that's what she wanted even though it was covered in dust from the dirt roads. I crossed the bridge and sat on the front bench with the other 3 parents.

Let me describe this bush chapel a bit more. It was a small patch of trees that grow quite crooked branches but which are high enough to walk under. The trees in and around the benches had been decorated with maybe about 20-30 dreamcatchers of various colours and sizes and bunches of beautiful flowers. It looked like a surreal dreamland. At the front of this bush chapel was an open area big enough for at least 6 people to stand. Behind that open area hung a massive dreamcatcher which Trish and Abraham had made together. The circular frame of the thing was about 6 foot in diameter. Inside of that was the tree of life made out of twisted wire.

The ceremony started with the bridegroom, bridesmaids and master of ceremonies entering to the sound of an awesome rock song that I can't remember now because I've never heard it before. They stood in front with the massive dreamcatcher framing them. The music stopped and the fairy bride walked in to the sound of silence while trying not to cry with emotion while the bridegroom also tried not to cry. There were about 63 guests by the way.

Trish's 20 yr old brother conducted the ceremony and did a splendid job while his hands visibly shook uncontrollably. Abraham and Trish's hands also shook uncontrollably during the ceremony. They had written their vows themselves and they were incredibly touching. No religion or god was mentioned.

By this time though Abraham, Trish and her brother are all softly crying with emotion while still managing to do their part. Oh, by the way, their wedding rings have the same tree of life inside a circle like the dreamcatcher.

At the end of the ceremony Abraham makes an announcement which is a surprise to everyone including Trish. Despite his shy nature he is going to sing a song to her right there in front of everyone.
I don't know the name of the song but it was incredibly loving and sung in an unexpectedly gentle and beautiful voice coming out of the mouth of a rugged hippi/Tarzan man. Up until that point I was really cofident that I would not even come close to crying but Abraham's singing had tears streaming down my face by the time he finished the song. I was quite embarrassed until I realised that every person there was crying softly.

My word ! I have never encountered such an abundance of collective love among so many people at once. I was in a daze after the ceremony and couldn't seem to think properly for quite a few minutes. And no, I wasn't stoned at the time.

I was helped out of that daze by chatting with 2 of Trish's young friends. He reminded me of a young Jonny Depp and she reminded me of Lady Gaga. They looked really good as a couple. It was all quite surreal.

After the married couple had their photographs taken on a special spot they arrived back and a whole lot of group photos were taken with them, family and friends. After one photo including Trish's absent minded but lovely grandparents sitting on chairs, grandma stopped the whole process by insisting on having a photo taken with just her and me in it. Everyone looked on with bemused expressions while a couple photos were taken of just gran and I sitting together while the bride and groom stood to the side waiting.

Another thing I find necessary to mention is that despite the fact that Abraham's quite conservative Afrikaans speaking family made up the majority of the guests ,maybe 65 %, they were quite happy to have the entire ceremony in English. Abraham's father gave a beautiful speech in Afrikaans but otherwise it was all English. Abraham's brother who also gave a touching speech especially practiced English for that because he doesn't usually speak it. Also they are traditionally Christians but did not object to religion not being mentioned at all. This struck me as very accommodating, tolerant, respectful and thoughtful. I made a point of telling Abraham's father exactly that and thanking him sincerely. I was greatly impressed by that.

After the speeches and whatnot it was getting dark and it was announced that the newly weds were going to have their first dance of the evening. So everyone is expecting them to dance on the dancefloor in the reception hall. But no...another surprise. We're told to stand outside on a certain spot and wait a bit.

Out of the darkness appears Trish and Abrie dressed in black. They performed a fire dance all the way through 2 songs while twirling those burning things around in both hands. We all stood there mindblown and cheering. It was epic and they must have practiced quite a lot for that. So again they did away with a tradition and replaced it with a better and more impressive one.

All in all the whole wedding was really special and mindblowing in more than one way. Apparently they are flying to Vietnam for their honeymoon. I hope they have a great time.

I want to mention another thing that gave me a smile . On Friday on my way to the venue I was stopped at a roadblock. The policeman asked for my driver's licence which I produced while knowing full well that it had expired 3 yrs ago. Here in S.Africa we have to renue it every 5 yrs. As expected the cop said, "Your licence is expired. Turn your engine off and follow me to my car. "
I did that and when he took out the fine book he said something like,"No hard feelings, I'm just doing my job."
I said,"No worries bro, I understand. You must do what you must do. "

Before he started writing he asked me where I was from and then asked why I was so far from home. I told him I'm going to my daughter's wedding. He thought for a while and quietly said,"Alright, I have to write out this fine because my superiors are watching but I'm going to misspell your name and address, accidentally leave out your Identity no. and write the wrong registration no. for your car. That way you won't have to pay the fine which is going to be quite large. "
I thanked him kindly and quietly so the other cops couldn't hear me and then drove on to the wedding venue when he finished issuing the fine. So you see, some cops are actually nice guys if you are nice to them. That was another unusual and cool thing that happened together with all the rest.
It was a properly happy and emotional weekend with love shared by everyone. Even a cop. ☺
