I Am Native American

I don't like how my tribe tries rewriting our people's history. I guess because much of our tribal traditions are forgotten or because there's just not much to tell so they borrow traditions from other tribes to make our history sound more interesting? For example, every Summer they have this thing called the annual canoe journey which involves members of the tribal community getting together in large ocean canoes and traveling North along the coast. They try to pass this off as a traditional journey our ancestors did but that is simply not true. Our people were river people, we used smaller canoes made for traveling along rivers and in lakes. The bigger ocean canoes were used more by Alaskan Native Americans and if they were used in our area, our tribe certainly did not use them! Another example is they consider the flute a traditional instrument by our tribe but again, that's not true. It's a Southwest Native instrument, our people only used drums! What bothers me even more is that they recently opened up a museum in the area for our tribe's history and culture and of course, they're pushing all of these lies about our tribe claiming that they're our traditions. But most people don't have the guts to call them out for it or they just don't care so our history goes rewritten and people interested in learning about us become misinformed. I hope this isn't something that other Native American tribes do too because then our culture in general just becomes a big fat lie.

Most folk are proud of their heritage, and you seem ashamed. Such a pity because we all have roots, we all belong somewhere and are generally happy with that
I am an Englishman and most of our traditions are made up from somewhere.
Feel good about what your parents did, and their parents too, feel good about yourself.

@PerchingDove I just feel that you are not proud of your heritage, regardless of the wrongs. I am proud to be a Yorkshire man, though my forbears probably did a lot of bad. I am proud to be European though we persecuted your native people.
Sorry if I put it badly but I am not the most eloquent of people.
@Uncfred Well, I'm not sure where you got that idea. I'm saying I'm ashamed of my tribe rewriting our history.

@PerchingDove I apologise if I read you wrong, and won't comment any further.

I am sure the real history would be just as fascinating if they would just embrace it. Too many want to rewrite history instead of celebrating its contribution to today. Many of my family came from Oklahoma and have roots in some of the tribes that lived there (Oklahoma is known to have 32 tribes).

@PerchingDove You're Native American? Nice. I have a Native American Cherokee heritage myself. From my father's mother, and I'm real proud to know that.

I am confused as to who is running these events
texasdaddydom · 51-55, M
is it run by committee? who get to decide who is on? what are people who dont know or don't care in charge of the events? I agree it def sucks this is happening but i cant grasp how or why it is happening. but ill shut up now cause i am as white as it gets my people have fucked over yours even when trying to help.
@texasdaddydom I'm not bitter toward whites for things white people did centuries ago. That kind of thinking really holds us back as a people, I think. There isn't anything that can really be done, I don't think so it doesn't matter.

I did not infer you were I guess i was trying to say I don't know how to help and don't want to screw up trying. don't you agree it is pretty much and internal matter? if you want outside help contact local historical societies if nothing else they know the ins and outs of navigating the legal system from preserving stuff.really don't know out of my league here.

I understand your concern. I would be very interested in learning about your history and culture.

@Jackaloftheazuresand They won't listen to me.
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
History is important, may I then at least know your tribe's name so that I am another carrier of this knowledge?
@Jackaloftheazuresand Mine are Umpqua and Rogue River.
