How can you make a 10 year olds birthday special with no money?

My son turned 10 today but we just got back from vacation and my husband took 1 1/2 weeks off work and we are broke! How can we make his birthday special? I can bake a cake! But we can't afford a gift.

maybe you should have got the gift before you went on holiday...... thats grim that is, spending all the money on yourself and leaving your kid with no birthday present
Kids don't really care about money. Parents do. You can play games. You can go hiking with him and a few guests. Go to a park. See what things can be accessed for free in your locale. Time spent well to make memories matters so much more than expensive gifts. Kids lose interest quickly in material things. One of my son's happiest parties happened when he and about 4 other guests had a wicked pillow fight. It lasted til they had no more energy. LOL. If you can take photos of them having fun, all the better. And if you mention the circumstances briefly to the other kids' parents, they would likely happily send food or small gifts too.
@ColleenOhara: Thank you. Worked for me. :)
@PoetryNEmotion: One of my grown sons tried to tell me, the way I handled bd parties was so outdated. Pizza, movies, etc. You got it right Poetry. 🤓
@ColleenOhara: I couldn't afford that much and my son was raised to be practical. I never felt the need to compete with other parents. Thank you, my friend. You had it right too.

His birthday has been coming for a year! You didn't even bother to save money for a bday present. I guess make him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and go throw a ball and give him your attention at least. That's so sad.

Today is his special day to be happy! We just got back from Cuba which was paid for last Christmas, there hasn't been any work this spring so we were broke going to Cuba. And even broker coming back with all that time off. My husband promised our son to get him a new computer when he gets paid plus this coming weekend he can two of his best friends to the movies on Saturday. Its just today is the 18th I will bake a cake and get some candles and we have ice cream. But I only have $5 in the bank. Plus we all are sick. I'll buy him some candy.

@TattooKitten: thanks Kitten....I will!
You cannot go on vacation with all those worries. I hope you enjoyed it. Explain to your son briefly that the computer will have to wait and he will understand. Forget the other things. You all are so stressed. Take care of yourselves. You can tell him that you will celebrate simply when it is affordable. And no candy while everyone is sick. The special day will pass with minimal celebration.

It depends on the kid, if he is not too materialistic he will enjoy anything from a movie night with snacks to cake and chips with a small gift

I agree. The last thing anyone wants is another narcissistic selfish brat. There's way too many as is. Loving parents spending quality time with their kids lasts longer.

take him to the park spend quality time with him, your son wont care about gifts...don't say you have no money just have a great day with him

How about doing some things he wants to do? Rather than get him something that he'll forget about in a few weeks.

Omg the dollar store we just did this for my little sister in law. She liked the 1$ Dino eggs that you sit in water until they hatch. Then we made her a birthday cake out of ice cream sandwiches we stacked them 3 levels with frosting in between then we let her listen to music and dance. It was barely any money and she was happy.

You can find an inexpensive present at the Dollar Store (you must be able to find some change lying around).

Also you can go out to a park and play together, or give him a coupon saying it is redeemable to an amusement park later this year.

I'm sure you can be creative. :)

Kids that age love games. Come up with some sort of game that the family can all get involved in. Maybe even outside. Small prizes (maybe written promise cards to be redeemed later) could be awarded.

A camping trip for him and his dad would also be nice

Take him hiking or go on a special walk with him somewhere in your area. Ypufont have to spend money on him, quality time will mean more to him when he's 20 than the latest video game when he's 50.

Wtf. Wait. You went on vacation. Blew a bunch of money. And now yur asking for gift help , ? Or just ideas.
saintsong · 41-45, F
We were flat ass broke for the vacation, my husbands boss paid our way and we paid for our 4 kids, we had $500 to spend on this trip that's including gas food and pay and park and nessesities. I am not looking for money....just ideas to make his day special today.
ReaperofTime · 46-50, M
@saintchantal: ahhhh. Ok. Easy fix. Invite a few of his best friends. Hit a local park. Or lake if you got one ... cheap and they boys love it. I was raised by a single struggling mom who still managed to make holidays AWESOME

Make is favorite food bake a cake and spend the day at the park and maybe round up some $ for ice cream after
SW-User
Maybe tell your child that the vacation was the gift, but make the cake too.
I would suggest taking him on an outing. Let him choose the location
fddlpej · 61-69, M
Take him to a park for a picnic and let him play.
