Did you guys know Target has a Pride section now?

It’s AMAZING.

It is interesting, and often unappreciated, how important big businesses have been to the LGBT movement. Levi Strauss refused to back when criticized for advertising in gay publications. And gay marriage was possible, in part, because the idea had been normalized when so many corporations started offering domestic partner benefits. Businesses want customers and good employees.

Thanks for BA!

Not sure that's a good idea. Have to commend Target as they've walked the walk when it comes to gay rights. But this smells like a marketing ploy that, by design, separates gay from straight. Just sell the damn rainbow t-shirt. If someone wants to separate themselves even further by identifying with a flag, then let them. All this does, like the rainbow flag t-shirt, is create an "Us vs. Them." That's not how inclusion and equality is attained.

Of course it’s marketing. It’s Target. But you should at least do some research before you decide it’s bad. “Love wins” is hardly devicive. @Ynotisay

@Fluffy407 Is that what should do? I remember living in the Castro in San Francisco when a gay flag on a house meant something. It was also dangerous. That's when a lot of gay people paid a serious price for being gay. It's very, very different now.
And as a reminder, "Love wins" wasn't just an LGBTQ movement. It was the antithesis of separation. Flags, as an example, are all about separation. But I'll do my research. Thanks for the tip.

By pride, do you mean homosexual movement? 🤔

If so, that's kind of dumb. 😒
Fluffy407 · 41-45, F
Yeah, why should historically marginalized, mistreated, abused and murdered due to folks take public pride in who they are?
Chaoshead · 22-25, M
@Fluffy407 You're missing the point. The pride movement is supposed to make gay and other groups more accepted. However, no one's mind is going to be changed by emphasizing that their sexuality is "great" and should be exalted.

You should not be prideful about sexuality. It's an everyday occurrence - if you really want people to accept homosexuality then it should be depicted as normal. Have commercials with people who are lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs who happen to gay. Their sexuality should be assimilated into the recesses of society, not aggrandized to the forefront in everyone's view. That doesn't change minds.

@Chaoshead feeling sexuality shouldn’t be exalted makes sense, but I suppose the other side is, we allow the sexualization of children in beauty pageants, in ads for Gap. Nobody is losing their minds about that.

Sex sells everything from clothing to drinks to cars to internet providers.

I suppose being in the Bible Belt and growing up in a time where a child was murdered by his peers for his sexuality makes me a bit sensitive to the whole subject. For me it’s the fact that people should take pride in who they are, not be shunned and murdered for it. Marginalized. Turned into hilarious side characters for the amusement of the masses.

I’m just an ally, though, so I don’t know what it’s like. Growing up in a home where you might get beaten or kicked out for who you love... yeah I mean, I support pride because who you love and are attracted to (even if in your scenario it isn’t in anyone’s face, but holding hands can still get you murdered) should not dictate how you’re treated by society, as long as you’re both (or all three or whatever) consenting adults.

Not taking sides on this but what products are being sold it the pride section that are different than other sections? It might see a purpose if the items and products are different.

I do not necessarily agree with even all women's sections much less further gender discrimination sections.
Fluffy407 · 41-45, F
@DeWayfarer mostly clothing (t shirts, rompers, tanks, a few items of baby wear) and then some random stuff like buttons and such

Most of it has rainbows in some fashion, nothing says anything offensive, it’s mostly “love wins” or “love is love” and some just say “pride”
