is modesty all about sugar coating words or is it the other way around. how do you define sugar coating

ok, un-coated
"you're so ugly that your face could stop a clock"

but sugar coated
"your face makes time stand still"

:)

I define it as saying something in a rather softer and less harsh tone than what is really going on, I don't relate it to modesty at all
I tend to self deprecate with hyperbolic boasting. I probably make myself misunderstood by some.

I've always seen 'sugar coating' as a kind of default setting for people who are very concerned about the feelings of others, or their own popularity.

Sugar coating is like a disclaimer for brutal honesty.

Boasting and bragging is not the Dale Carnegie way!
I always thought modesty was how one carried themselves or dressed!
@quinnVneck hmm... maybe it's a combination of both our opinions?

I don't think so, it is a kind of humbleness and not thinking you know all the answers.

Nothing wrong with a bit of sugar, but too much and you get emotional diabetes.

sugar coating words is a way of making something unpleasant sound better than it is (highlighting the positive and downplaying the negative). It's got nothing to do with modesty
