People go on about the way dogs love their owners unconditionally. This is undoubtedly true. The thing they forget is that a dog's love is slavish and comes from their natural instinct to be loyal to who they see as their pack leader. (You).
A cat, however, is an individual, free spirit. When a cat shows affection it's because they want to, not through some inborn need, and that makes it so much more meaningful.
Having said that, there's a saying that goes something like this - Dogs have owners, while cats have staff. ;-)
