Why do we have memories?
What purpose do these memories serve? Are we just bundles of memories or what? Most of the thoughts are just products of memories, aren't they?

Evolutionary it's so that we can learn from our mistakes and remember what we were taught. If you remember that a certain berry makes you sick, you won't eat it again. If you remember that your parents taught you that lions were dangerous, you will stay away from them.

good memories reminds us about what makes us happy and feel alive.., bad one's are the experiences which we should avoid happening to us again..
so the purpose of memories is to teach us how to live your life at best..
