Could anyone make me understand or explain what a transistor is?

Thank you.

First there were valves, these had internal components, they were eventually replaced by transistors which enabled smaller and more voluminous componentry, the transistor eventually became the Integrated circuit, the transistor began or was part of microelectronics, hence the reason cell phones and all other kinds of technology are getting smaller and smaller.

It's an electronic switch that turns the flow of electricity on or off in billionths of a second. You put enough of them together and make them work together just right and you get things like cell phones and televisions.

I'd say in simplest terms, it's a very fast, electronically controlled switch. ah.. google says it can also amplify a signal.
