They Cage The Animals At Night?

Why was their mother gone so much? I only remember vague mention of her being "sick". But that seems like the kinda thing you tell a kid when they parents are on drugs or an alcoholic. And I think I remember at least one of the older kids seemed to be kind spiteful towards her. I haven't read it in a long time.
