Because sometimes doing stupid, destructive patterns over and over again gets you something that you unconsciously want.

@nihiless: bullies want to hurt a parent who hurt them, so they go around hurting people for no reason because it satiates that desire. Some people want to avoid taking responsibility for their lives, so they sabotage everything that might give them the strength to build themselves up. We all have sick, stupid things that we consciously or unconsciously want. So we make the same mistake again and again, because on some level it's not really a mistake, not in terms of our deeper intentions.
