My suspicion is that that strike group that's doing war games around the Korean peninsula is a case of that old tactic they used in West Germany.
You place a small force totally incapable of mounting an offensive in a place where the enemy would be likely to attack, so that if the enemy does attack they'll bring the Americans into war, but make them look like the victims of an unjust attack.
That way, China would likely see NK as the aggressors and stay out of it if the USA retaliated.
The difference being that I think the US military is very wrong to be approaching North Korea as if it were the USSR. The Soviets were generally civilised once Stalin kicked it, and they had the benefit of not being ruled by someone as unstable as Kim Jong Un. I don't think Kim realises how little the Chinese are willing to get lured into a costly war on his behalf.
