"Educate Yourself" -- the Favorite Phrase of People Who Do Not Educate Themselves

Reading a source of info that you agree with before reading it is not "education". Choosing to believe things that make you feel good about yourself is not "education". Getting your "info" from people you decide in advance that you will believe is not "education".

Regarding the current Hamas/Palestine-Israel conflict or anything else, if you want to express an opinion or take a position, do the work of trying to find as much objective info as possible. Then take some objective humble logic and have an opinion based on honest truth-seeking. THEN, state your view, or tell people to "educate themselves".

Of course, 90% of people who say "educate yourself" have never done any part of this. (95% in a place like SW.) But they love to lavish their opinions on others, just before going back to their normal "educated" lives of spending all their free time watching TV, playing video games, and chatting about inconsequential things online.

If you have a truly educated opinion, then state it carefully and clearly, and be prepared to defend it with objective information and logic. It is great. No matter what your view. Go for it. But that is not common. Common is this: "Let me jump up and down and tell you all my opinions about things I have little or no objective knowledge of, and criticize your views in ways that show I didn't even understand what you said, using strawmen and other logical errors in order to dishonestly bolster my un-informed ear-tickling views."

Israel / Palestine is the one conflict where the more I educate myself, the less I feel I know. Best not to discuss it online I think.

@NenaRussa What a smart comment. What are you doing on this site? 😁 There are some individual 'pieces' about the conflict that are not that difficult -- like some common lies, and some clear facts that an objective person can see if they dig just a bit. But many details of the thing, and the totality of the conflict -- complex and messy and so old. Yah, like you said, best not to discuss it online -- outside of any pieces of it that are very clear.

Preach it brother

I find those who say "educate yourself" or "do your own research" are usually the ones who haven't either as they can't provide you with sources. People with answers give them.

@Ryannnnnn I have to remind myself of this, too. It's so easy to choose to believe what one feels like. It's a battle....if one is doing it right.
