Question question

Fall quarter I helped this guy who was really struggling with school, didn't ask him to pay for tutoring or anything. I just felt that he was struggling so bad and couldn't look away without doing something.
Now that I'm in the US and on campus, he's offered to "take me out to dinner", I guess as a way to say thanks. I've told him he didn't have to but he's insisted, and insisted specifically on "dinner". Because of the way I've seen that phrase used, I just wanted to be sure that he doesn't consider this a date. If this sounds homophobic I'm very sorry, I'm not super familiar with dating norms here so I just wanted to be sure.
