Why do so many employers have unrealistic expectations when hiring new employees?

I have had a few jobs in the past nothing major nothing long term however looking for jobs is tough for me in many times employers have unrealistic expectations.

Everyone says I have great interview skills so I don't think that is a problem.

Many times when applying for jobs I see a simple job that you shouldn't really need any prior experience to be able to do however it says They want You 2 have prior Experience.

Specifically one job I applied for I actually applied to it twice when I saw the job opening was available again was produce clerk at Hannaford supermarkets. Both times I applied I got nothing however I applied to the same position but at Shaw's Supermarket and in the job description for some reason it said they wanted you to have prior retail experience to be able to do the produce clerk job.

As I mentioned I have noticed so many employers want you to have prior experience When you apply for the job but how are you supposed to get prior experience to show you are able to do a job when every job you apply for has that expectation of you having prior experience so you can't get those jobs it is so stupid all I'm looking for is a simple job that is not working a cash register working at a fast food place I do not wanna Wash dishes or wait tables but most other things I can do as long as they can train me to do the job and I don't need A college degreed to do it it is so stupid.

The only other official restrictions I have on getting a jobs is I have worked at a liquor bottling company before and it is extremely fast paced production lines fairly heavy repetitive strenuous work and I did that for about 3 months and my arm muscles started to bother me a lot and I couldn't continue with it so I can't do a job like that in the future if I do a production job it has to be something that is varied a little bit and very light weight.

I am generally looking for a job that is still active but not very strenuous and repetitive if it is in office job working at a computer it has to be something that is able to be active so I can get out of my chair and go do other things in the building not just sit all day

Out of the 20 to 25 jobs i have applied for i have gotten nothing.

I have worked at a few places before a summer job for one summer at a golf course in which I wanted to come back the next summer and they wanted me back but I was in college and the snow melted sooner than I was ready to start working and they hired a person in my place. Another place I worked at was an indoor trampoline park but I got fired for some reason and they didn't tell me why. The third-place was a job working with UPS doing driver helper I sit in the passenger seat and help deliver packages that was just a seasonal job from Thanksgiving to Christmas. The final job was the one I just did at the bottling plant that was the 1 those too strenuous in repetitive but no 1 else seems to want to hire me since then it has been 2 or 3 months since my last job and it's getting a bit ridiculous i know it's always hard to find jobs but come on.

In the past I have applied for a automotive reconditioning in wash job at a dealership about 6 different times they want people to clean the inside and outside of the cars they have people vacuum dust wash the outside of the cars shampoo the carpets and seats different things like that and they kept posting the job opening about 6 or more times and each time I saw it I applied to it in got nothing for the 1st time I applied to it was the only time I got a job interview at the place and since then got nothing from them and I have applied To to Other dealerships for auto re conditioning in wash in have heard nothing from them also I have applied to a trucking company for tank washer where you hook up a hose to the tanker truck in wash out the excess fuel that is left inside after the truck is emptied in differing odd jobs like that and have heard absolutely nothing.

To me it seems like some employers don't want to hire a perfectly capable person sometimes they just want someone is slightly more experience but you can't get experience unless you've done something

Just a thought: If your interviewing skills are great they may see you as too good for the job, with a likelihood of jumping when a better job elsewhere else comes along, or that you will leverage the experience you gain there for a better job elsewhere.

Also, if your application/resume already shows a lot of variety, without much longevity at any one place, or within one type of work, they may already have you pegged as a short timer before you ever get to talk to anyone there. Then the good interview confirms that you probably do a lot of job hunting.

If the above does fit, maybe consider narrowing your search to temporary openings or positions. Once there, if you like the place and the job, apply for a permanent position from within, as a temporary. Everything else being equal, a temporary employee that they like is almost a shoe-in for a permanent position.

That’s the problem, they expect to get an experienced worker that they don’t have to train. But those workers have moved on or moved up to a better job. Gotta start somewhere.

@cherokeepatti Exactly
It matters if the interviewer likes you or not.

@ThePrinceofTijuana Also since I haven't finished college yet because I wanted to switch my major if I don't get a job by next fall when school is going to start I will try to have a backup plan to enroll in college classes to finish up and get a degree then I will probably have a better chance of getting a job that's my plan for now

@Jeremazing13 I worked at a university and department heads would post jobs on the job board, so many people would apply for those jobs and they’d weed out the top 10-15 and interview the people. Then give the job to someone they already had in mind for the job that worked for their department. They don’t mind putting a lot of people to trouble to come for the interview & get their hopes up.

@cherokeepatti Lots of government, civil service, and government agencies do that. They have to be able to document that they gave anyone qualified an opportunity, and that they made a selection without bias ... to cover their tracks when they do hire/promote the person they already had in mind (i.e. their biased choice) :)
