It really depends on what kind of services you want and need.
The problem with credit unions is if you frequently need cash and your nowhere near that branch. It will cost you to get that cash.
Now if you don't need or rarely need cash, yes, credit unions are great.
That's just one type of service. There are others as well. Like balance transfer services when dealing with credit cards. Or one of the latest things like sending and receiving money over a cellphone.
Go for what you need. There are deals even with major banks. You just got to find them.
Example: at one major bank if you have a steady job that has direct deposit and one bill that could be paid or even partially paid via automatic bill payment, then checking accounts are free.
