They are all so grand but, the maintenance! I cannot fathom the cost.

@Freeranger Most are run by Historic Scotland now; very few folk can afford to live in a castle. Imagine the heating in winter.

@helensusanswift I contemplate that very thing at times. I envision all that stone just absorbing the Winter and turning the interior literally in to a freezer. My thought is that those "bonny" Scots cheated at home when no one was watching and they wore longjohns.😉
The thought of this conversation reminds me of things I'd read in the past regarding England's grand manors and how, following WW1, death taxes and the government virtually made it impossible for it's royalty and landed gentry to live on the grand estates anymore and the result was that so many were literally torn down. I find that so very sad.

@Freeranger The original Highland clothes were nothing like the 'short' kilt you see today. It was a great long swathe of cloth that could be wrapped around to keep out the cold. Most folk lived in small houses that were amazingly well designed against the weather, with double walls and insulation, thick heather roofs held down by heather ropes and weighed with stones (the wind can get pretty ferocious) and with peat fires in the centre.

Where is that?

@Entwistle Drummond Castle in Scotland; I have just posted a series of images from the same place.
